Drying out the air filtersThis event run by the Eastbourne and RAM Motor Club was a first for both of us, being a regularity rally. We were entering this in Mike's 1964 rally prepared Triumph Herald. Although the car has completed a number of off-road events, this was to be it's first road rally. Mike had his work cut out trying to prepare it for a an MOT in time for this event. You can read more about it in his blog here.

BCC Autotests Nov 08 PDF Print E-mail

Bedford Autotests November 2008This is event was a series of autotests on a gravel/loose surface organised by the Bedford Car Club. I'd originally gone as the navigator for Mike in his Triumph 2.5PI Mk2, but the opportunity presented itself to have a drive as well. The weather wasn't great but it still couldn't dampen anyone's spirits. Over the course of the day, eight coned circuits were arranged with each one becoming slightly more complicated. The car was a bit big for this type of event but the suspension improvements made since the Little Devils tests earlier this year reduced the understeer and resulted in some exciting sideways action! Apparently the straight six engine sounded pretty good too. At the end of the day I finished towards the bottom of the results table (fortunately not last though!) but I was happy for my first "competitive" driving event. Mike performed much better, but then perhaps he had a better navigator...

Round Britain Reliability Run 2008 PDF Print E-mail

1968 Triumph 2.5PI Mk1 at Blyth ServicesCompleted the Round Britain Reliability Run last weekend in a 1968 Triumph 2.5 PI Mk1. We had a great time and only suffered a couple of breakdowns. The first at 3am outside Edinburgh when the fuel pump packed up. We eventually got it changed only to find the battery had also gone flat. Fornutately we were kindly assisted by the entrants in a TR7 who gave us a jump start. Only an hour lost and we were back on our way. On the second occasion the wheel nuts came loose on one wheel and snapped a wheel stud. This was quickly replaced at Conon Bridge. We also had a flat battery on a couple of occasions which was due to a 20amp alternator and too much technology. In addition to the SatNav, phones and blue wand attached to the boot, we were trying to run a laptop with a webcam to capture the entire 48 hour journey. Unfortnately we had to abort this during the night when the additional load of headlights and wipers started to discharge the battery. We did manage to get at least half the journey though. See the videos and pictures below. The event is organised by Club Triumph with over 100 Triumphs taking part, each one raising sponsorship for the RNLI.
